All About Summer Reading 2020

If there's been one constant in our current situation, it's been change! That's why we decided to do the bulk of the summer reading program virtually. Please check our Facebook page and the Summer Reading pages on our website for announcements as we move through the program.

Summer Reading is a program designed to keep kids reading when school is out. There are three parts to the program:

  • Tracking minutes spent reading or being read to
  • Story times
  • Programs

Kids ages 5 – 12 can sign up for the Children’s Program and kids ages 3 – 5 can sign up the Pre-K Program. (Parents of five year olds can chose either program.)

Reading minutes will be logged online using a program called READsquared. Story times and programs will be recorded and posted on the website and Facebook. Physical prizes will be awarded based on hours spent reading or being read to. Please check the website or Facebook page to see how we are doing prize pickups.

Parents can register each child for his or her own READsquared program. Kids can log in to their dashboard to record their reading minutes, earn badges, complete fun missions and even play games.  They will earn one point for each reading minute logged. If they reach 1,000 points they will earn a certificate that can be shared online and/or printed. The minutes will also be used to earn physical prizes.

Please watch this YouTube video from the Farmingdale Public Library, located in Farmingdale, Nassau County, NY. It explains it all! Watch it up to the 8:54 mark. The content past that mark does not apply to our program. Our missions, games and reading lists will be a bit different, too.
